Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why should we book with Tropical Day Sails? Open or Close

Because we are confident that we will provide you with the best day sail and leave you coming back for more experiences. Our team is passionate about treating every guest like gold, and it’s because we really, passionately care.

Don’t just take our word for it. We have been recognized in the industry, and are proud to list our winnings:

2016 Luxury Travel Guide Awards – Best Day Sail in the Americas/Caribbean

Virgin Islands Property & Yacht Magazine’s 2016 Readers Choice Awards – First place in Best Day Sail Captain and Second place in Best Day Sail in the BVI

  • Do we need to bring our passports? Open or Close

No, we stay in the BVI territory.

  • I have never snorkeled before; will I be ok? Open or Close

Yes, you are guaranteed to love your snorkel experience with us! Our crew takes absolute great care of you every step of the way, no matter your skill level. If you are not a strong swimmer or feel you don’t want to exert yourself, we have snorkel vests for you to use. We also have kids’ sizes so the kids can snorkel/swim safely.

  • What should we bring? Open or Close

Swimsuits, hats, sunglasses, towels, sunscreen, and cash for lunch off the boat. You don’t need to bring snorkeling gear, we have it onboard. It’s a good idea to wear your swimsuit under your clothes when you board. No shoes, no worries…you don’t need them!

  • What is the minimum and maximum guests you can take? Open or Close

On a non-private/join-in sail, we have a minimum payment for 6 pax policy to launch. On a private vessel hire sail, there is no minimum requirement. In the BVI, Tropical Spirit is licensed to take up to 30 guests comfortably. We have ample shaded cockpit and trampoline/exterior space with comfortable seating arrangements.

  • Will I get seasick? Open or Close

No-one can answer that question. If you have a tendency to suffer from motion sickness, bring some motion sickness tablets or ginger-anything. However, we can tell you that unlike any mono-hull, our catamaran is extremely stable and handles all conditions like a dream. In fact, Tropical Spirit has smoothly crossed the Atlantic Ocean - starting from Mozambique, around Cape Town, to reach her final waters of the British Virgin Islands. In case of bad weather or ocean conditions, the captain will recommend a safe alternative. In case of hurricanes or named tropical storms, we will try to find an alternative date for you if possible.

  • Do you have my favorite drink on board? Open or Close

We have a fully stocked bar with local beers ($4), rum drinks ($4) and soft drinks ($2). If you have any special request, please let us know in advance and we will stock up with all your favorites, even wine or champagne. Note that all requests are subject to availability on the island. Remember we have an open bar option ($20pp) so you don’t have to worry about bringing cash and keeping track.

  • How does gratuity work? Open or Close

It is customary to tip your crew if you’ve had a great time on board at the end of the day. Our crew works very hard to ensure your every need is met and you have a safe and memorable sail. The standard in the BVI is 15 – 20% of the booking fee. We recommend to bring extra cash.

  • Why is lunch on the boat not included? What if we get hungry or thirsty? Open or Close

Our vessel is a purposely-built for day sail catamaran, which means we don’t have kitchen facilities on board. But we do have a fully stocked bar, which you can enjoy on a cash bar basis or opt for the open bar extra ($20pp)! As another optional extra, you can arrange with us to cater for you in the form of a delicious snack platter ($20pp) loaded with a selection of cheeses, fresh seasonal fruit, a selection of cold cuts, crackers and dips. Let us know if we need to keep in mind any special dietary requirements. Platters are complementary on our sunset sails.

We recommend the best beach spots to have lunch at during your full day sail itinerary. Most restaurants accept standard credit cards, but it’s always a good idea to bring some extra cash.

  • What days of the week or months of the year are you not operational? Open or Close

We sail every day, any day of the year. Some days are pre-booked for cruise ship excursions. Check in with us on our availability.

  • How do we pay you? Open or Close

Once you have confirmed your sail, we will email you an invoice via our cloud accounting system. The invoice will contain a link to the easy online payment portal. We accept PayPal, VISA and Master Card. You can also choose to pay in cash (US dollars), do an electronic transfer to our US account or an international wire transfer to our local account. Your payment in full secures your booking

  • We are on a cruise ship. Will you be able to accommodate us and have us back in time? Open or Close

Yes, we currently have contracts with most medium and large cruise liners visiting Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Jost van Dyke, so we are used to strictly keeping to their arrival and departure times. These cruise liners include Disney Cruise Lines, Windstar Cruises, AIDA and more. Please contact your cruise line’s shore excursions/port adventures department to book via our ports agent, Island Shipping & Trading Company. If you can’t find us on their itineraries, you are welcome to contact us directly to inquire.

  • What happens if I need to cancel the booking? Or if Tropical Day Sails have to cancel due to weather or maintenance issues? Open or Close

    Guest cancellation:
    - Cancellation > 14 days - payment can only be applied to a future charter at a date mutually agreed upon, if not able to reschedule, 100% of booking fee is forfeited
    - Cancellation < more than 14 days - 50% refund
    - No shows - guests are liable for full amount

    Bad weather:
    - Charters may be canceled with advance warning if possible in case of bad/extreme weather which may put lives in danger. 50% will be refunded if rebooking is not possible

    - Written email cancellation
    - Indemnity applies
    - Payment implies acceptance

  • Can we choose where we’d like to go, or change our mind on the day? Open or Close

Yes, you can! Throughout the booking process, we will ask all the necessary questions to find out what your ideal day out on the water looks like. We will then suggest the best itinerary to suit your needs – whether you’d like to swim or snorkel, hop from beach bar to beach bar, explore one or more islands, watch the sun sets, party on the boat or just sail around – we got you covered here in the BVI!
You are welcome to change your mind on the day, and if it is within reason and a good idea weather-wise, the captain will make it happen.

  • Why do we need to pay for the minimum of six adults to ensure my trip gets launched? And will I get my money back if we pay for six and you or us manage to find more guests after that? Open or Close

We work on a pre-booking system, and as with any business we have bottom-line operating costs, so we appreciate your understanding that we have a business to run and therefore cannot run a trip for less than six guest. Most guests are more than happy to pay the minimum fee requirement and ensure their best day ever out on the water can take place.
You or us can try and find more guests to join if you are not keen to pay for the minimum requirement. Note that should you (or us) manage find extra joiners after you have paid, your payment is non-refundable as that is the risk you have taken.

  • Do you take walk-in bookings? Open or Close

No, we work on a pre-booking basis and only launch trips when booked and paid for before the sail. However, if you happen to walk by Tropical Spirit (we have a bright blue stack pack!) in a marina, and you have nothing planned for the day and willing to carpe diem, please join us. But it’s best to contact us early to avoid a vacation without a day sail.

  • Where does Tropical Spirit depart from? Open or Close

Our vessel, Tropical Spirit, can go wherever our guests are located in the BVI. We can pick you up from your nearest marina, within reason off course. Oftentimes it is best to depart from a marina that is best placed to reach a certain destination, and if that is the case, we will advise.
We have picked up guests, and will continue to do so, from the Anegada Reef Hotel dock, Baraka Point Estate, Bitter End Yacht Club, Cane Garden Bay, Cooper Island Beach Club, Gun Creek, Jost van Dyke, Leverick Bay Marina, Little Dix Resort, Nanny Cay, Oil Nut Bay, Peter Island Resort, Scrub Island Resort, Soper’s Hole, Trellis Bay, Village Cay Marina (Road Town), Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour (Spanish Town).
