About us

Tropical Day Sails is the brain child of South Africans Jacques Schoonees and Thys Greeff, dating as far back as 2008. Jacques worked as a captain on a charter catamaran in the British Virgin Islands for 5 years, while Thys was dreaming of getting out of the corporate rat race.

Captain Jacques Schoonees

After returning to South Africa in 2012, the two sailors at heart started to put the plan in motion to become the number one day sail company in the British Virgin Islands.

Tropical Day Sails was born and they started in all earnest to dress the business plan in sails, hulls and engines. The team chose Tropical Spirit, a vessel from the catamaran factory of family-owned Scape Yachts in Gordon’s Bay, South Africa. Tropical Spirit is a 40ft catamaran that is purposely-built for the smoothest and most comfortable day sailing.

But to start sailing the seven-shades-of-blue Caribbean waters, Tropical Spirit first had to make her way from the divers’ paradise of Mozambique, get refitted for Caribbean waters, and then make the 40 day and 40 night-long trek from Cape Town’s scenic Victoria and Alfred Wharf across the Atlantic Ocean.

Thys Greeff

On 1 December 2015, Tropical Day Sails started operating out of Tortola to service most large, medium and small cruise ships, villas and resort-vacationers alike. And since May 2016 the team has been based in the BVI’s gem, Virgin Gorda.

Tropical Day Sails works with most of the major cruise lines visiting the BVIs, but if you can’t find our snorkel tours via the cruise line, feel free to contact us directly.

We look forward to seeing you onboard for a ‘best day ever’ on the water you will treasure forever.
